Howard Rosenberg Interviews Terri Pepper, CEO, TerraLex
October 15, 2026In this episode of The Future Is Bright podcast, Howard Rosenberg, head of Talent Intelligence + Acquisitions at Baretz+Brunelle, and his co-host Chris Batz welcome Terri Pepper, CEO of TerraLex. TerraLex is a global network of independent law firms with members in more than 140 countries and roughly 220 jurisdictions. Terri has led the network for more than 10 years, and will be stepping down at the end of October to return to consulting. Her path to her current role began in the mid-1980s, when she became one of the first law firm marketing directors in Atlanta. She later worked at Hildebrandt Consulting on strategy and mergers before overseeing operations at a national law firm.
Terri explains why firms that choose to stay independent still get real value from a network built around collaboration, and how TerraLex members go to market together to compete with larger global firms. She also makes the case that independent does not necessarily mean small. The conversation also covered myLexi, the closed AI assistant TerraLex launched in under six months, and what a not-for-profit with a tight budget learned from building it. The discussion closes on private capital and the pressure it puts on firms that have fought to remain independent for decades—and in some cases, centuries.
Episode Highlights
-
Why Every Firm on a Network Team Owns the Client
In a large firm, origination credit can often quietly decide which clients matter most. What changes when a group of independent firms serves one client and every lawyer at the table has a stake in the relationship. -
Building a Closed AI Assistant on a Nonprofit Budget
TerraLex trained myLexi only on its own content, from cross-border guides to member information. What that choice has meant for accuracy, and how the rollout came together in less than six months. -
What Happens When the Network Meets in Person
Members describe the twice-yearly global meetings as being more like a family reunion than a business meeting. A look inside the speed dating-style sessions where firms find clients and industries they can pursue together. -
What Outsiders Get Wrong About Legal Networks
Who pays whom, and how big the member firms really are. Terri corrects two common assumptions, with an example featuring a newly added firm in Ethiopia. -
Private Capital and the Pressure on Independent Firms
Outside investment has members in Europe rethinking who they compete with and how. Why U.S. lawyers are still skeptical, and whether firms that have stayed independent for generations can keep it that way.
